Former Manchester United footballer Keith Gillespie has been declared bankrupt at Belfast High Court, it has emerged.

The process took place as a result of an order made against the ex-Northern Ireland international following a petition by HM Revenue and Customs.

He had professional spells at clubs such as Manchester United, Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers, but found himself without a contract this summer after leaving Irish League outfit Glentoran, who have money troubles themselves.

Gillespie is one of the most capped Northern Ireland players of all time, amassing over 80 appearances during his long career.

According to reports, a High Court document showed the decision was made due to evidence provided by a solicitor acting for HM Revenue and Customs, which also stated the Official Receiver has been appointed manager of the sportsman's estate.

If you're also struggling with financial problems, asking IVA questions could be beneficial and offer you some much-needed breathing space from your debts.

It might be a more favourable method of insolvency than bankruptcy too - depending on your circumstances - as it has the potential to leave you completely debt-free without obstructing your path into certain careers or forcing you to sell the family home.
