Brits may face £50 council tax rise

Friday 24th of July 2009

Council tax bills could reach almost £1,500 for some people next year, a record high, which could lead to many households requiring individual voluntary arrangement (IVA) advice.

Britons living in Band D properties could face the highest level seen for their category, an increase from the current £1,414.

The figure comes after it was announced that £50 could be added on to all council tax bills.

With the cost of living potentially once again increasing, some people may struggle to meet all their financial commitments. In order to cover mortgage, rent or council tax costs, some Britons may decide to seek IVA advice, to see if their monthly credit card and loan repayments can be reduced.

The Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy warned of the increase after new accountancy rules governing holiday pay for council employees could push up bills by three per cent.

Recent research from Confused.com revealed that between the ages of 18 and 70, the average person will pay over £63,000 in council tax.
