Help for those who are struggling with their finances has been introduced today (Monday April 6th), in the form of debt relief orders.
The new measure allows those on low incomes who are unable to afford bankruptcy to write off what they owe and begin again after one year.
Consumer minister Gareth Thomas explained that those in poverty will be boosted by the introduction of debt relief orders, although he added that they do not represent an easy option for those with debt management problems.
Explaining that steps are being taken to make sure consumers are fairly treated, he said: "Many people are already struggling to stay on top of their bills and pay their debts so we are taking action to ensure consumers are in control of their finances."
Last week, campaign group Which? highlighted the debt relief order as a means to help those who owe less than £15,000 and urged consumers to seek advice if they are in financial difficulty.
