Citizens Advice hails debt management help

Thursday 19th of March 2009

Government measures to help people struggling as a result of the economic downturn have been praised.

Welcoming the news, Citizens Advice noted that it had previously recommended many of the initiatives.

Prime minister Gordon Brown announced a number of steps, also highlighting the benefits of new debt relief orders, which come into effect next month and are designed to help those owing less than £15,000 to avoid bankruptcy.

Teresa Perchard, director of policy at Citizens Advice, stated that extra resources being committed to helping those with debt problems is also a positive move.

"This package of measures shows the government has been listening to people’s concerns and is responding to the problems they are experiencing as a result of the downturn," she said, adding that they would ensure "fairer" treatment of consumers.

Mr Brown also announced that debt enforcement would be subject to review, in order to provide a greater degree of clarity.
