Seek debt help early, expert says

Thursday 14th of May 2009

Consumers who are struggling to repay what they owe have been advised to seek debt solutions early.

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) noted that large numbers of people losing their jobs mean that the need for help is increasing.

Joseph Surtees, policy and research officer at the charity, explained that the recession and media coverage has meant that borrowers are now more likely to look for advice early on.

And he said: "The earlier they access these tools, the less impact the problems will have on their life, the sooner you will be able to live your life normally again."

Those who are facing difficulty in repaying unsecured loans may wish to seek IVA advice online, as non-borrowing solutions are available to combat debt problems.

Recent CCCS figures indicated that those with debt worries are increasingly affluent, as 12 per cent of people seeking help have household incomes of more than £30,000.
