Recession 'causing debt problems' for nurses

Tuesday 12th of May 2009

The recession is increasingly causing nurses in the UK to worry about their financial situation.

A study by LV= and the Royal College of Nursing indicated that 72 per cent of people in the profession are now worried about money than they were a year ago.

In addition, one-third stated that they regularly run out of cash by the end of the month and as such many are building up debts on credit cards in order to make ends meet.

Nurses - and indeed all workers - who face such problems may wish to seek advice on debt management programmes, as these can enable affordable repayment plans to be agreed with creditors.

The report was released today (May 12th) coincide with International Nurses Day and LV= head of partnerships Michele Alcock remarked: "Nurses regularly work extremely long hours to help others selflessly, yet they face the same stark financial realities as the rest of us."

Meanwhile, the Trades Union Congress has called for increases to the minimum wage to go ahead despite the recession, in order to help those on low incomes.
