Online shopping increase adding to debt pain?

Thursday 10th of March 2011

The increasing ease and availability of online shopping might have the potential to drive people further into debt - and for those already owing more than £15,000, this could result in them seeking IVA answers.

New figures from the Payments Council have shown more people carried out their festive spending over the internet last year, as they migrated from the high street to the web.

The total amount UK consumers spent with retailers last November came to £11.2 billion, while that forked out in December reached £13.3 billion.

Sandra Quinn, director of communications at the Payments Council, said the internet has had a considerable effect on shopping habits, adding: "Many of us [choose] to shop on line to get the best deals and to avoid the shops at the busiest time of year."

Earlier in the week, figures released by moneysupermarket.com showed that 23 per cent of Brits are having to utilise their savings in order to buy everyday goods.
