No pay increase for council workers

No pay increase for council workers

Thursday 17th of February 2011

Council workers deep in debt may find asking individual voluntary arrangement questions is one way for them to improve their lot after it was revealed they will not be receiving a pay increase.

Employers have announced they cannot afford to offer a wage rise of at least £250 a year because they need to plug a £6.5 billion funding gap while also meeting the costs of maintaining services.

It means more than one million local council employees in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will not be receiving any improved income.

Jan Parkinson, managing director of Local Government Employers, said: "This decision has not been taken lightly. Councils are facing extremely tough choices this year and have to ask their whole workforce to recognise the need to limit spending."

Earlier in the month, a study carried out by the Labour Research Department revealed only 28 per cent of workplace representatives in Britain believe their salary is likely to rise at or above the rate of price increases for most workers.
