Consumers are likely to keep a close eye on their spending as concerns about economic wellbeing remain in the coming months.
That is the opinion of Richard Dodd of the British Retail Consortium, who noted that figures showing an increase in confidence do not necessarily represent a sustained recovery.
As debt problems continue to mount, many people are likely to be looking at ways to reduce their outgoings in order to keep on top of what they owe.
But some may find that they are in need of solutions such as debt management plans, as Mr Dodd observed that job losses are causing concern.
"People are increasingly worrying about their jobs and we’re actually seeing unemployment going up," he said.
Nationwide’s consumer confidence survey increased by two points last month, but with recent figures showing that unemployment has passed the two million mark, debt management plans may be needed by those who are struggling to afford repayments.
