Demand for legal advice grows as recession adds to debt worries, study suggests

Tuesday 2nd of June 2009

A growing number of people have been seeking legal advice as a result of redundancies during the recession, research has indicated.

Insurer LV= revealed that its legal helpline has seen calls rise by 21 per cent in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period in 2008.

Redundancy and other employment issues were the subject of a quarter of all enquiries - an increase of a third - something that may have been prompted by increasing debt worries as a result of job losses.

Indeed, nearly half of people with employment queries cited the recession as the cause of their problems, with many having to take pay cuts or work reduced hours.

John O’Roarke of LV= remarked: "The statistics from our helpline show that an increasing number of people are looking for legal help because of employment problems caused directly by the recession."

Those who are struggling with their debt may wish to seek IVA advice online, as moneysupermarket.com has recommended that borrowers look for help in identifying debt solutions.
