People who are already struggling to keep on top of their finances and are considering asking independent voluntary arrangement questions may be in for a nasty shock when their next energy bills arrive.
Moneysupermarket.com has warned many households will be posted higher-than-normal charges because of the energy used to heat homes during the cold snap in December.
The price comparison website noted 40 per cent of Britain's annual energy consumption was used during this spell.
Utilities manager at the portal Scott Byrom said Brits will be "brought back down to earth with a bump this New Year when a huge energy bill lands on their doorstep, especially after experiencing the coldest December since records began".
He added this will be unwelcome news for those who have already endured a costly festive season.
Research recently carried out by Skipton Building Society showed 33 per cent of adults in the UK do not earn enough to put aside any spare cash at the end of each month.
