For people already deep in the red who are owing in excess of £15,000, falling victim to card fraud could be the tipping of the scales that leads them to seek IVA answers.
Mark Bowerman, spokesman for Financial Fraud Action UK, suggested people need to do all they can to prevent themselves suffering at the hands of such a crime.
The industry figure advised: "Make sure that you keep your pin a secret and whenever you're typing it into a keypad make sure you shield that keypad."
He added this technique should be used regardless of whether a person is at a cash machine or a shop.
The issue is currently on the slide because of the success of banking initiatives and consumers taking heed of the advice they are given, Mr Bowerman noted, adding people still need to remain vigilant.
Recent research carried out by ACI Worldwide found that card crime is perceived as the biggest fraud threat by 50 per cent of consumers in the UK.
