Debt management concerns 'can lead to depression'

Tuesday 9th of June 2009

Debt management concerns are having a detrimental effect on people’s mental health, one expert has suggested.

Paul Farmer, chief executive of charity Mind, stated that the difficult economic conditions at present are leading to individuals worrying about being made unemployed.

"Job insecurity can really put a strain on working relationships and motivation levels and money worries alone can cause problems such as stress, anxiety and depression," he explained.

His comments were made in response to new research from Harris Interactive, which found this week that approximately two-thirds of people have difficulty sleeping at least once a month and one-third struggle once a week amid the recession.

In addition, almost ten per cent of individuals admitted to using prescribed sleep medication during the last six months.

A debt management plan could be the key to ending such sleepless nights, with the majority of those polled claiming money and job worries were the main reasons for them staying awake.
