The last thing people owing more than £15,000 in debts and considering asking individual voluntary arrangement questions may need is to fork out on preventable payments.
However, new research from uSwitch.com has found many UK adults are having to dig deep on issues such as mobile phone insurance claims.
The investigation showed more than one million such claims were made in Britain last year.
Of these, 60 per cent of phones were accidentally damaged, 20 per cent were lost and 11 per cent stolen.
Communications expert at the website Ernest Doku said: "Accidents can happen, but such is our dependence on our mobiles that replacing them can be a seriously inconvenient, not to mention costly, exercise."
He added that while many handsets appear to be getting smarter, their owners are not.
Earlier in the month, NFU Mutual observed the average cost for a claim related to damaged or missing jewellery in 2010 was £3,671, which marked a leap of more than £900 when compared with figures four years earlier.
