Consumers remain concerned about employment levels and the UK economy, a study has revealed.
Nationwide’s index of confidence has shown that 68 per cent of people do not think many jobs are available - compared to 66 per cent a month ago - while 80 per cent of respondents described the current economic situation as ‘bad’.
Those who struggling to find employment or who fear that they will be unable to cope with what they owe if they are to lose their job may wish to consider seeking advice on a debt management plan - as this could help reduce difficulties.
Despite fears about employment, Nationwide revealed that overall confidence actually rose by the largest amount in two years.
Senior economist Martin Gahbauer explained that signs that an "improvement in the lending conditions" could be on the way is a potential reason, although he noted that the economy is likely to continue contracting.
Meanwhile, the Treasury Committee has described the government’s expectations of a sharp economic recovery in 2011 as "optimistic".
