Brits 'using credit cards for online shopping'

Monday 29th of November 2010

There may be a rise in the number of Brits asking individual voluntary arrangements questions after research found that 25.4 million people are now regularly using credit cards to make online purchases.

According to the study by Sainsbury's Finance, 1.2 million individuals are spending more than £1,000 every month on plastic, while 5.9 million Brits have started using the finance option to buy products over the internet in the past three years.

"The growth of online shopping in such a short time is staggering. Our research found that only seven per cent of credit card holders do not use their cards online," said head of cards at the financial group, Stuart McKeggie.

The investigation revealed that Brits' spending habits varied depending on their geographical location, with individuals from the South East spending an average of £236 a month on plastic when shopping online - the highest in the UK.

Earlier this month, a previous study carried out by Sainsbury's Finance showed that 21 per cent of all purchases are made using credit cards.
