Brits advised to avoid costly Christmas away

Tuesday 21st of December 2010

Brits already struggling to keep on top of their spiralling debts have been advised to avoid exacerbating their troubles by enduring a costly Christmas away.

People who do not adequately plan their yuletide holiday may need to ask individual voluntary arrangement (IVA) questions if a mishap should happen while they are away from home, after Aviva warned burst pipes caused by the freezing weather could prove costly in the coming weeks.

The organisation claimed December 2010 may turn out to be one of the coldest on record - and just one burst pipe could result in ruined furnishings and belongings, as well as the possibility of ceilings falling down.

Director of household claims at Aviva Rob Townend said: "When homes are left empty, burst or leaking pipes often aren't discovered for many days and so damage can get progressively worse."

And people already deep in the red may require IVA answers if they are involved in a car crash, as the AA has witnessed a significant increase in road collisions during the current cold snap.
