Added debt woe for young females?

Added debt woe for young females?

Thursday 24th of February 2011

More women could soon be asking individual voluntary arrangement questions as new figures show young females are set to be hit the hardest with increases to car insurance premiums.

Running a car can be costly at the best of times and new research from Confused.com has found that should a new EU Gender Directive be put in place, female drivers of a younger age could be hit by sharp rises in the cost of their premium.

Under the suggested directive, it could become illegal for car insurers to charge different premiums based on a driver's sex.

Traditionally, young male drivers are charged higher rates as they are more likely to make expensive insurance claims.

Marketing director of Confused.com Mike Hoban said: "In particular, young female drivers are likely to suffer."

He added: "Women drivers aged 17-20 saw a 37.5 per cent increase in premium price during 2010, making the average policy for this group £1,694."

General secretary of the Trades Union Congress Brendan Barber recently said that young people are still feeling the impact of the recession, despite continued recovery from the economic downturn.
