People already deep in the red and considering posing individual voluntary arrangement questions to help improve their financial position may find they are not doing all they can to reduce their outgoings.

New research from Confused.com has found many UK adults are not switching their home insurance provider - resulting in Brits collectively wasting £1.7 billion.

The comparison website revealed 13 per cent of households have never changed the company they receive the cover from, while 70 per cent have been with the same organisation for more than a year.

Mark Gabriel, head of home insurance at the portal, said: "Shopping around can not only ensure the best value for money deal, but can also prompt householders to ensure they have the right level of cover."

Martin Bamford, chartered financial planner and managing director at Informed Choice, recently advised parents need to budget effectively in order to raise their children comfortably.
