14m go without heating 'to save cash'

The financial predicament of many people in Britain appears to be so bad that they are willing to forego heating during the coldest December in 100 years in an effort to save cash.

New research from uSwitch has found more than 14 million households went cold last month as they wanted to keep their energy costs down.

But for those struggling with debts who are going to such extremes, asking individual voluntary questions could be one way to get their finances back on track.

The investigation revealed a seven per cent increase on last year's figures for people either rationing or cutting down energy use because of the money involved.

Director of consumer policy at uSwitch Ann Robinson said: "This is the unacceptable price that British consumers are being forced to pay because of the high cost of energy today."

The findings come after managing director of moneymaxim.co.uk Mark Bower recently claimed household finances are being considerably squeezed by mounting gas and electricity prices, food costs and VAT increases.
